Coaching Staff

Bruce Gemmell - Gold 1, Gold 2

Bruce Gemmell joined the NCAP staff in 2012. American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) and USA Swimming named him the National Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He has been a US National Team Coach multiple times and a National Junior Team Coach multiple times for over 2 decades. Bruce was a 2016 US Olympic Coach and has been named to USA Swimming’s International Staff and Camps in 2010-2012-2013-2014-2015-2016-2017-2018 - 2019-2022 and 2023. Numerous swimmers coached by Bruce have made USA Swimming  International Teams and have won multiple international medals. Bruce is a member of USA Swimming’s Board of Directors and World Aquatics Coaches Committee.  He is an ASCA Level 5 Coach.

Dory Halbe - Silver 1

Dory began her career at NCAP in 2011 after graduating from American University. She was a Bronze assistant at Holton Arms before leading the Bronze program at Georgetown Prep in 2013.  In 2021, Dory took over as the coach for the Silver 1 program. Dory has coached multiple Zones Qualifiers, JO Finalists, Sectional Qualifiers, PVS Record Holders, and NCSA Qualifiers.

In high school, Dory swam for Mission San Jose Aquatics and Archbishop Mitty High School in the California Bay Area. She was a US Open and NCAA "B" Qualifier. While at American University, she broke the school record in the 50 & 100 Free, 100 Breast, and 200 IM. She was the Patriot League conference champion in the 100 Breast in 2009. She currently lives in Silver Spring, MD with her husband Matt, her 4 kids, and 2 dogs.

Stephen Sakaris - Gold 3

Coach Stephen started with NCAP in 2016 and coaches the Silver 2 program at our Georgetown Prep Site.  Coach Stephen grew up swimming in the DMV area and went on to swim at the collegiate level at The Ohio State University, graduating undergrad in 2012.  He has a masters in Sports Management from Ohio State and also runs his own strength and conditioning business, working primarily with swimmers.  Coach Stephen is excited for another great season and looks forward to seeing you all on the pool deck!

Phil Kominski - Silver 2

Phil Kominski began swimming competitively the day he was born into his family. No joke, with seven brothers and sisters arriving before him, and one after, the majority of whom were swimmers, there was little choice: It was “Swim or live with the neighbors”.  

He swam for The Prince-Mont Swim League for thirteen years, setting several team and pool records.  He club swam for RMSC for twelve years as well as at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, before transferring to the University of Maryland at College Park.  Additionally, Phil has coached for both MCSL and PMSL.

Outside of swimming, Phil is a Musician and owns an Events Agency,  Freestyle Booking & Events, which focuses on placing musicians, DJS, lighting, photo booths and more for weddings, corporate events and other private functions.  Phil, and one of his bands (Lloyd Dobler Effect, now The Breakaways) has toured the world and shared the stage as an opening act for musicians such as The Goo Goo Dolls, Kansas, Jack Johnson, Eminem, Better Than Ezra, Third Eye Blind, The Strokes, Janes Addiction, The Roots and many, many others.

Phil lives in Olney, Maryland with his wife Elizabeth (English Teacher, Musician and head of the Theatre Department at Sherwood High School), his son (Tyler), his daughter (Harper) and their two dogs (Jack & Jill).

Gabi Meisel - Bronze Assistant

Gabi Meisel is a 23-year-old recent graduate from Bates College. 

Since she was seven years old, she has swam competitively on a number of teams including NCAP, RMSC, ASA along with summer swimming at North Chevy Chase Pool, and swimming for the Bethesda Chevy Chase Barons during high school. 

Having grown up in Montgomery County, she was very involved with coaching as well. On top of her private swim coaching and lessons, in 2019 she coached for her MCSL home pool, North Chevy Chase Sharx as an Assistant Coach. This past summer, she coached for the Old Georgetown Club dolphins as an Assistant Head Coach. 

At Bates she studied Environmental Studies and Anthropology while also swimming for the Women’s Varsity Swim and Dive team.

In addition to my swimming, she was also the President of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee of 50+ athletes, participated in Student Government as a Senior Representative, represented the New England Small College Athletic Conference(NESCAC) as a board member, and was a leader for Bates Freshman Orientation Outdoor Program.

She is very excited to work with your children, as she is very passionate about swimming, while simultaneously helping them grow as athletes and people. 

Emily Capellan- Bronze 1

Emily grew up swimming starting at the age of four and continued until college. Emily swam with MCSL on the Aspen Hill, Connecticut Belair teams and with RMSC. Later coaching different teams/groups in MCSL and RMSC.

Emily graduated from Sherwood High School, Montgomery College and Lycoming College with a degree in Psychology. Emily competed on many sports teams, soccer, swimming and lacrosse in her high school and college years. After graduating from Lycoming College, Emily spent the next year living in the Dominican Republic working as a teacher assistant, embracing a new culture, learning spanish, traveling and exploring. Emily received her Masters in Education from The University of Maryland and is a 1st grade teacher. Emily lives in Damascus with her husband Franklin, where they enjoy taking care of their many chickens! 

Emily is excited to join the NCAP community and help swimmers grow their passion and love for swimming.

Christine Cochrane- Bronze 2

Ever since she was a child diving for “fishies” at the neighborhood pool, Christine Cochrane’s passion has been the swimming pool. As a young swimmer, Christine swam for the Prince Mont Swim League (PMSL), where she was part of a relay team that set the county record and introduced her to lifelong friends. She swam competitively for RMSC, and NCAP. Christine also swam for Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL), Montgomery Square Copenhaver. Highlights of her MCSL career include Coaches Long Course, All-Stars, and All-Star Relays. Christine was a member of the Metro Championship Winning Varsity Swim Team at T.S. Wootton all four years of high school. As Team Lead of Clinical Research at Boston Children's Hospital Division of Sports Medicine, she spearheaded studies to help swimmers and other athletes prevent and treat sports-related injuries.  Prior to joining the NCAP staff, Christine served as Coach for Swim Montgomery and Montgomery Stroke and Turn Clinic, with the goal of encouraging the next generation to swim well and have fun.
